To get the most out of your microneedling session, soothe your skin, and protect your skin from damage as it heals, follow these aftercare recommendations. Microneedling creates thousands of micro-channels in the epidermis.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling (aka micro-needling) is a popular, non-invasive treatment used for a variety of skin conditions. It has been growing in popularity and used as an alternative to more invasive procedures such as dermabrasion and laser treatments. The treatment is typically used to treat fine lines and wrinkles. In short, it makes your skin look and feel smoother.

One of the benefits of microneedling is that it can last for a long time. Patients typically see results within a few weeks, but they may require repeated treatments over the course of several months.

Microneedling Aftercare Tips

Aftercare for microneedling varies based on the method and size of the needle used. The most common aftercare for microneedling is hydration, sun protection, and mild exfoliation. It’s important to note that the use of sunscreen is imperative for anyone who has been subjected to microneedling therapy. While the needles are fine and barely noticeable, UV rays can still be absorbed into the skin and cause permanent damage to the epidermis.

Applying hyaluronic acid in the first 24 hours supports collagen induction. These pores will be open for 24 to 48 hours. During this time, don’t apply makeup or other chemicals that may go into the microchannels.

You will likely be red and sensitive to touch immediately after the treatment. The redness typically clears within 24-48 hours.

The Hyaluronic acid will dry and peel. You can remoisturize the hyaluronic acid by gently massaging the Rose toner over your face.

For 48 hours, avoid wearing makeup, avoid direct sun exposure

For the first 24 hours Apply, rose hydrosol, hyaluronic acid, TCM topical, and aloe vera. Do not scrub or exfoliate the skin. Gently wash with warm water applied by your hands and not a washcloth.

After 24 hours: apply sunscreen in the morning; moisturizing cream in the morning or evening; antioxidant-rich topical oils like Cactus oil, Green tea oil, or CBD oil in the evening. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and soft washcloth.

For the first 24-48 hours avoid intense exercise, sauna, steam, hot water, or anything that causes sweating. Also, avoid swimming pools or other chlorinated water.

For the first 24-48 hours do not take any anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, and Advil. These agents will interfere with the natural inflammatory process that is critical and responsible for skin rejuvenation. Discuss medications with your prescribing primary care provider.

For 1 week, avoid abrasive skin care products (those listed in the preparation handout, including vitamin C serum)

For 1 week, avoid sunburns or extended sun exposure

For 2-4 weeks, avoid getting other cosmetic procedures

Results

Within two days following your Microneedling procedure, you will notice skin dryness and flaking. This is due to an increased turnover of skin cells. During this time we recommend applying a hydrating moisturizer. Do not pick at or try to flake off the dry skin. Allow the skin to exfoliate on its own.

Typically within 1 week, brightness, glow, decrease in fine lines, plumper skin

Over the next 3-4 weeks, with collagen production acceleration, reduction in pore size and fine lines, reduction in blemishes

Most people will notice results within as little as 24 to 72 hours, but it’s important to remember that these are temporary results. Usually, your initial results fade over the next week. Your true results will be visible after at least two to four weeks, depending on how fast your body produces collagen in the skin.

The results of your treatment will continue to prove as new collagen matures in the skin and provides the skin with additional support. The collagen maturation process is often quicker for younger patients, who may be able to see final results as soon as three to four weeks after treatment; older patients may require more than four weeks to see desired results.
